Description
Rotary encoder KY-040 Angular position sensor, is an electro mechanical device that throws a digital output on the CLK and DT pins, this module can be connected to the Arduino so that it shows the encoder step and the direction of rotation. The encoder can be pressed so that it can be used to select something.
Rotary encoder operation is very simple, turning the incremental encoder axis two square signals called channel A (CLK) and B (DT) are generated, if the common pin is set to ground and channel A and B with pull up resistors to VCC, signals A and B generate pulses that are 90 degrees out of phase and their sequence is:
A/B: 1/0; 1/1; 0/1 clockwise, and
B/A: 0/1; 1/1; 1/0 counterclockwise.
This is known as 2-bit Gray code.
