The PCF8574 is an 8-bit I/O expander compatible with most microcontrollers, allows bidirectional communication using only two lines through the I2C bus.

Works as I2C interface for 4x4 keyboard

The PCF8574 module allows you to expand the Arduino digital inputs or outputs using only 2 lines of the I2C bus (SDA and SCL). The PCF8574 chip allows to convert data in parallel (8 I/O) to I2C and vice versa, making it ideal for handling devices such as: Alphanumeric LCD displays, matrix keyboards, LEDs, relays and more. You can share the I2C bus with other devices to save pins, for example: RTC, memory, sensors. Up to 8 PCF8574 expanders can be handled on the same I2C bus and thus handle a total of 64 I/O using only 2 pins.
